The Shirtless Spirit Squad, also known as S^3 is a group of five to eight guys from the high school who like to show spirit to the school’s athletes. The guys in the squad vary depending on who is available. The main people in the squad are Justin Armbruster (12), Ben Buchanan (12), Tyler White (11) and Josh Wiltz (12). So far, the Shirtless Spirit Squad has spelled out the words “T-Birds!”, “I Believe”, “SHHS”, “Seniors” and “State!” For state volleyball.

“We like to do it because we wanna get hype for our athletes,” Armbruster said.

The Shirtless Spirit Squad started because Armbruster and Shurtz are responsible to keep the student section involved during the games since they are the leaders of spirit club. After the first time they did it, the Squad agreed that they should keep doing it because they felt like they had an obligation to the athletic teams to continue showing their pride and spirit. Armbruster and White do the majority of the painting.

“Tyler specializes in painting the complicated letters while I stick with the easy ones.” Armbruster said.

The Shirtless Spirit Squad gets a shout out almost every time they attend a game full out from WIBW news on Twitter. Our school spirit at the games is carried by the upperclassmen, but it’s struggling from the underclassmen who stand in the back. To be a part of the Shirtless Spirit Squad, you have to tryout. If you can demonstrate that you’re going to interact and get the student section more involved at the games, there’s a chance that you could be called upon to help them out. For basketball season they plan on continuing although they are losing three members of the squad, Buchanan, Shurtz and  White. They have recruited three new members to replace them during the basketball season, Cole Emerson (12), Mitchell Lady (11) and Justice Mitchell (12).

“With the underclassmen being the future of the program we need people to step up!” Shurtz said.
