Reaching Students
Online schooling is difficult for paras and special education teachers to reach their students needs. New ways have been found to provide extra support through technology.

With cancellations of sports, prom, and graduation most can overlook the possible cancellation of summer school. Reaching those students who need extra help with learning has become a new challenge for special education teachers and paras.
“I believe for most students, face to face is more effective but do think some students are thriving with online learning,” Ashli LaGrand, an elementary school special education teacher said. “I think it is difficult to help some students or gauge how they are really doing online.”
With modifying assignments and individual Zoom meetings with paras, special education students have their own continuous learning plan. Students reaching out for help on assignments while also finding their motivation to finish the school year strong, makes special education teachers and paras important to a new degree.
“The counselor stopped by with a little care box for her, which I thought was awesome,” Amy German, mother of a middle school special education student said. “So they’re trying to do some extra stuff.”
Online schooling is hard for many students, not only academically but also mentally. The social aspect is something students can’t rely on anymore. Finding a daily routine and adjusting to no hands on learning is a major adjustment.
“I think there’s going to be a big gap, especially with the younger kids,” Cristie Standifer, mother of two students said. “I don’t think there will be enough information in the next few weeks for them to be where they were supposed to be at the start of new school year.”
Online schooling has been difficult for everyone to adjust to but teachers and support staff are reaching their students as best they can.
